Student Accommodation in Sheffield

The City

Victoria Hall is ideally placed for exploring Sheffield, a city which offers all the benefits of a lively, genuinely friendly city, whilst being situated right on the edge of the Peak District National Park (meaning that half of the population live within 15 minutes of open countryside). Most places can be reached using the city’s bus and tram systems, although if you want to save your pennies you can generally get around by walking – since the city is built on seven hills, getting fit will definitely be an added bonus if you choose the latter option!

Sheffield has a deserved reputation as a student-friendly city, and boasts a unique and truly diverse range of bars, clubs and pubs. You need go no further than Division St or West St, to discover popular places to drink including the Forum, Bungalows and Bears, the Cavendish and the Frog and Parrot. There are also plenty of real ale pubs, including the award-winning Kelham Island Tavern, and some great nightclubs – among the most popular are Plug, Embrace, DQ's, the Leadmill and Corporation, not to mention the great (and cheap!) nights on offer at the two students’ unions. There is a thriving live music scene from indie, rock and thrash to mainstream, folk and blues, with venues including the Leadmill, O2 Academy, Corporation, Plug, the Harley, the Stock Room, the Boardwalk, Sheffield City Hall, Sheffield Arena and Don Valley Stadium. Gigs are also regularly hosted at Sheffield University Students’ Union.

For all your retail needs, the popular Fargate shopping area is a five minute walk - on your way visit the cool boutiques and vintage shops in and around the Devonshire Quarter. For serious shoppers a short tram ride will take you to the Meadowhall indoor shopping mall, (the fifth largest in the UK). There are also countless places to eat to suit every budget - as well as pavement cafés and tapas bars there are the usual Indian, Chinese and Mexican restaurants plus Japanese, Cuban, Lebanese and African eateries. Neither is there any shortage of cultural attractions - Sheffield boasts two major theatres, the Lyceum and the Crucible, together with four major art galleries. Amongst others, there is the Cineworld complex just a short tram ride away, and for real film buffs the independent Showroom cinema and bar is just a ten minute walk.

For the more sports-minded there’s the nearby Ponds Forge sports centre, with its Olympic-sized swimming pool.  Sheffield also has its own nearby ski village, as well as the Ice Sheffield skating arena. Both universities have excellent sports facilities, all within easy walking distance, (the city is also home to the oldest football club in the world – Sheffield FC!)

Sheffield is one of the greenest cities in England with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks. You’re only a stones’ throw away from open countryside, and the Devonshire Green directly opposite Victoria Hall is a popular city centre green space. You’ll find everything you need right here but if you do want to get away for the weekend you can be in Leeds or Manchester by train within an hour or London in just over two hours.

Despite its wealth of facilities, Sheffield isn’t an expensive place to live, and many students find themselves staying here after they finish their studies. It’s also worth adding that Sheffield is known as the biggest village in England, and that, according to Crime Stats, it’s officially the safest city in the UK. All in all, the city offers an excellent place to get the most out of your time at university - Sheffield has it all.
